New Roadside Rest Stops Highlight Local Tourist Spots

MORRISTOWN – The two new Belmont County Roadside Rest Stops that opened in March feature local tourist sites ranging from natural history and recreation to the area’s storied history.

Both units feature three history panels outlining the history of the National Road, U.S. 40 and I-70. The National Road in Ohio, the first federally funded highway, was launched at the Belmont County Courthouse with a groundbreaking ceremony 200 years ago, July 4, 1825.
To mark the occasion, the Belmont County Tourism Council’s Belmont County Heritage Museum, 101 East Main Street, St. Clairsville, will host a program, “Milestones and Memories”, Thursday, July 31 from 4-6 p.m.
The westbound unit also highlights tourist attractions to the west of the county.
Interestingly, the eastbound unit focuses on sites in Belmont, Jefferson and Monroe counties, just as visitors are about to depart the state for points east.

While the multi-million-dollar units opened four months ago, a formal ribbon cutting/grand opening ceremony has yet to be set, according to Lauren Borrell, public information officer at the District 11 ODOT office in New Philadelphia.
Local sites profiled on the eastbound unit not shown include Piedmont Lake, Shaefer-Campbell Covered Bridge near Ohio University Eastern, Piatt Park Gorge and Cave Area near Woodsfield, and the Steubenville Mural Tour.
