Students Honored/Recognized by Barnesville BOE

Spelling Bee Winners. The Barnesville Exempted Village Board of Education recognized the district’s Spelling Bee winners at its May 16 meeting.

The 2024 Spelling Bee honors were presented to District Runner Up: Blake Brown. He is a sixth-grade student at Barnesville Middle School. This is his first year in the district bee and his first year in the county bee. His favorite subject in school is Science.

Meanwhile, the Spelling Bee District winner is Trinity Garrett. She is an eighth-grade student at Barnesville Middle School. Garrett has been in the district bee for three years and this was her first time in the county bee. Her favorite subject in school is Language Arts. (Also, WBNV)

Robotics Teams Honored. The Barnesville Exempted Village Board of Education recognized the Barnesville Middle School Competition Robotics teams at its recent meeting.

Team members are Evan Wells, William Worcester, Kevin Phillips, Sadie Johnson, Lydia Welch, Owen Miller, Bryson Shriver, Landyn Wehr, Zach Mazgaj, Shaunell Ralston, Gavin Zumoch and Trey Bethel.

According to faculty advisor Jon Jordan, “April 28-30, the Barnesville Middle School Competition Robotics teams competed at the Vex World Championships in Dalas. This is Barnesville Middle School’s fifth year qualifying for the world championship, but the first time both teams qualified at the same time.”

“Both teams qualified by placing in the top 10 in the state of Ohio in skills at the Ohio state championships. There are over 500 teams representing more than 30 countries at the international competition. Our teams completed in separate divisions made up of about 90 teams each, each playing 10 matches.”

“One team finished with a 6-4 record while the other finished 5-5, ranking 33rd and 50th respectfully. Barnesville met competition from all over the world, overcoming language barriers and posting their best yet at the Vex Worlds Championship,” Jordan concluded.

High School team members that competed on the state level were also recognized at the meeting. Members of the two high school teams are: Cole Eddy, Ryland Wehr, Brooklyn Miller, Kennedy Little, Ronnie Duvall, Reese Bostic, Bo Detling, Izzy Reed, Taylor Crooks, Bonita Passmore and Natalie Burkhart.

High School FFA Members Recognized. Barnesville’s General Livestock Judging Team came in third in statewide competition this spring. Competitors are Emma Welch, Ryland Wehr, Lydia Fuchs and Mac Cacioppo. Alternates: Brooke Watson and Reece Bostic.

BHS students achieving the Ohio State FFA Degrees this spring are Aydan Andrews, Suzanne Carpenter, Payton Dudzik, Grace Goodhart and Eli Messenger.

At the Board meeting, two local businesses were honored with Ohio School Board Association Honor Roll Awards – see Business News below.

Upcoming School Board Meetings. The next BOE meeting will take place Thursday, June 13, 5:30 at the Middle School. And a special year end meeting will take place on Friday, June 28 at 7:00 in the morning.
