Union Local High School Commencement
Since 1960, graduation has been a feature at the Morristown Campus. The program got underway in the high school gymnasium at 6:00 Friday night, May 24.
Julie Broussard and Lauren Miller are the valedictorians and receiving salutatorian honors is Diego King.
Broussard is the daughter of Landon and Janice Bourque and Anthony and Karen Broussard. She resides in Flushing with her parents and dogs, Benjamin and Sandi. Julie Broussard is finishing her high school career with a 4.8690 grade point average.
During high school, Broussard was a member of the volleyball team where she lettered for four years. She earned the District 12 honorable mention award for two years and the District 12 First Team All Star award. She was also on the All-Times Leader volleyball team and was named District 12 and OVAC All Star. She also currently holds the school record for digs. In addition, she has earned academic letters since her freshman year and was recognized with the All-OVAC Academic Award and the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association Academic Achievements Award. She has been in the National Honor Society since junior year and has been in the National Society of High School Scholars since her sophomore year. She has been on the principal’s list all four years of high school and participated in College Credit Plus through Belmont College and Ohio University Eastern. She has been a member of the Belmont County Schools Staying Clean Club, Future Educators of America club, and the Future Farmers of America club. She has played for Club Gold South Volleyball for six years and is a current employee at Giacinta’s Gelato and Cafe. She often volunteers her time to Cumberland Pointe Care Center in St. Clairsville.
Her future plans include attending Ohio University in Athens and pursuing a degree in business finance.
Miller is the daughter of Jodi and Jerry Miller. She resides in Adena with her parents, brother Jared, and three pets. She is finishing her high school career with a 4.8690 GPA.
During high school, she has earned academic letters for the past three years, was recognized with the All-OVAC Academic Award and was also named a graduation marshal last year. She has been on the principal’s list all four years and participated in CCP through Belmont College and Ohio University Eastern. In addition, she has been a member of the basketball and softball teams, where she lettered in both sports. She has been named first team Buckeye 8, first team All-OVAC, and First Team Eastern District, co-player of the year Eastern District, First Team District 12, player of the year District 12, and First Team All-Ohio for basketball. For softball, Lauren was named All Times Leader team, First Team Buckeye 8, First Team All-OVAC, First Team Eastern District, and Second Team All-Ohio. She participated in the OVAC All-Star basketball game, the District 12 All-Star basketball game, and the Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis All-Star basketball game. She was also named The Times Leader Athlete of the Week. Lauren has been a mentor at the Madison School basketball camp for three years. She has been a camp counselor at both sixth grade camp and the Rich Saffield basketball camp. Some clubs that Lauren has been involved in are FFA, Belmont County Schools Staying Clean Club, prom planning, homecoming planning, and youth led. During Lauren’s junior year, she was voted onto prom court and her senior year she was a queen candidate for homecoming and prom. Lauren was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2022 and has been an active member since then. She has been the secretary for the 2024 class for three years.
Lauren is a member of New Bridge Church in Wheeling. Her plans include attending Ohio University and pursuing a degree in human biology.
King is the son of Silvia Farmer. He resides in Belmont. Diego is finishing his high school career with a 4.819 GPA.
In his four years of high school, Diego has gone through the entire engineering pathway and a large part of the computer science pathway. He has taken several honors classes and was a member of the cross country, swim and track teams. He participated in College Credit Plus classes for Belmont College, Ohio University Eastern, and has gotten college credit through Rochester Institute of Technology with Project Lead The Way. Diego has his TRUST certificate and plans to become a certified drone pilot. He is also the lead operator of the CNC machine in the shop.
Outside of school, Diego has worked at Pike 40 for over a year. He is enrolled in the Honors College at Bowling Green State University and is currently majoring in computer and electronics engineering.
Union Local Superintendent Zac Shutler will present the class during the ceremony and board President Ed Stenger will accept the class.
Music will be provided by the school band, directed by Thomas Swisher. Juniors Sloan Hanasky and Gilby Carpenter will serve as marshals with Abigail Myers and Pierce Luyster as ushers.
