Libraries Sound Alarm Over Proposed Cuts

The Belmont County Library District is joining other library leaders statewide urging the Ohio House of Representatives to scuttle the present biennium budget proposal to drastically cut state support for public libraries.

The proposal will eliminate the current Public Library Fund and replace it with a lump sum payment equal to the state’s support of libraries over a quarter of a century ago – a reduction of 50 percent of current funding levels.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s state budget proposed a 1.75 percent increase over current state funding.

The possible cut of $200,000 in funding to the Belmont County system that operates libraries in several communities including Bethesda and Flushing.

The Barnesville District library would also lose 50 percent of its state funding under the proposed budget.

Individuals are encouraged to reach out to the area’s two state representatives Don Jones and Ron Ferguson or House Speaker Matt Huffman.
