This photo of the iconic Bradfield Building at the corner of Main and Chestnut was taken prior to 1901. The building next door at 105 East Main, long owned by the Chaney family and the G.C. Murphy Annex is now the home to the OHHC Dental Clinic, is yet to be built. The previous building at that location was destroyed in the January 12-13, 1895, fire.
To the far right is the older two-story building that predated the c.1901 three story Campbell Building, today’s Bohandy Building. Not also the block stone in front of the man standing on the Campbell corner. It was a stone “upping block”.
An upping block, also called an upping stone, is a small stone or wooden platform used to help people board carriages or buggies. It provides a step-up to assist passengers, especially women wearing skirts and bustles, and children, in easily climbing into the vehicle.
