by Lisa Gallagher, Barnesville Area News
The community is invited to the 15th Annual BMS Cutting Class for a Cure on May 16, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 2:45 PM, located at the Barnesville Middle School. The Survivor Walk, open to all cancer survivors, will be held at 8:30 AM. Food, music, and games are featured all day. Students and the public can purchase tickets for food and prizes. Available food includes deep-fried Oreos, Kirke’s ice cream, deep-fried cheese on a stick, fresh-cut fries, taco in a bag, snow cones, homemade noodles, chocolate, hot dogs, and more. Prizes begin to be awarded at 2:00 PM. You need not be present to win.
In 2009, middle school teachers Bev McConnell and Lori Witchey started the event known as “Coins for a Cure,” in which students brought in change to put in a decorated coffee can and gave it to Pat Reischman of 3C Cancer Support Group. Both teachers’ lives were impacted by cancer. As the event grew, it became “Cutting Class for a Cure” and is a registered non-profit organization that assists any Belmont County resident currently in cancer treatment. Middle School teacher Denise Leach is the chair of the organization.
