BHS Grad Named South Carolina Coach of the Year

David Milliken, a 1992 Barnesville grad, was recently named the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Spring Coach of the Year.

Milliken has served as Waccamaw High School Warriors’ Boys Track and Field Coach for the past two years, according to a post by the school.

“This season featured a 3A State Champion in the 400m Dash, a thrilling win in the 3A 4x400m Relay, and a dominant performance as region 5 Boys Champions, scoring an impressive 283.50 points at the meet in Loris”, according to the release.  

The team capped off the season as South Carolina AAA State Champs.

Milliken is middle school teacher at Waccamaw School, Pawleys Island, SC, part of the Georgetown County School District.  

The South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, protecting, and teaching student athletes in South Carolina through effective leadership and professional development for coaches. They host annual clinics, have a Hall of Fame, and provide resources for coaches across the state.

Baseball Team Honors

Junior standout Dylan Blon was named to the second 2nd OVAC All-Star team.

In addition, Caleb Powell participated in the OVAC All-Star baseball game this week.

Softball Team Honors

Six BHS Softball team members were recognized as members of the All-Eastern District team.

  • 1st team – Maddy Tyson and Lilly Welch
  • 2nd team – Payton Dudzik and Abigail Johnson
  • Honorable Mention – Chaela Smolira and Kylee Powell.

In addition, Tyson participated in the OVAC All-Star Game at the YMCA I-470 fields in Wheeling.    

Injury Sidelines Zumock

BHS standout track team member Aden Zumock qualified on Friday for the finals for Saturday’s D-II 100m dash finals with a time off 10.84.

To make it to Saturday’s Finals he broke Coach Ryan Grear’s school record of 10.86 set back in 1997.

According to Barnesville Shamrock Athletics, “due to an unfortunate injury late in the 200M yesterday Aden was not able to compete in the Finals” on Saturday.   

Aden finished his career at OSU’s Jesses Owens Memorial Stadium as the fastest runner in school history.

He was a District champion four times, two-time regional champ, an OVAC champion, two-time state qualifier and outdoor state finalist.   

In doing so, Aden now holds BHS records for 100 and 200.

Ohio Wins All-Star Football Game   

Five BHS football players were selected  to play in the 30th Annual Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis Football game at St. Mary’s, West Virginia Friday night. Taking part in the All Star game that saw the Ohio squad blank West Virginia 23-0 were Casey Carpenter, Blake Kirk, Evan Lough, Bradey McIntire, and Braden Butler.
