Hospital Donates to Summer Lunch Program

WVU Medicine Barnesville Hospital’s Lindsay Dowdle, left, was happy to drop off a donation of gloves for the Barnesville Summer Lunch Program after Kim Henderson, one of the lunch coordinators, put out the plea for disposable gloves. “We’re proud to support this great community effort,“ Dowdle said.

Kelsay Garvin recently saw Virginia Waggle for a follow-up visit at Barnesville Family Medicine. When staff asked if there was anything else they could do for her that day, Waggle mentioned her frustration with not being able to weed her flower beds, which had become overgrown.
Virginia is blessed with a “green thumb.” For many years during the long flowering season, Sunday services at the Somerton Church of Christ were brightened by a beautifully arranged bouquet of flowers selected from her garden.
Without hesitation, the team sprang into action. After wrapping up a long work week, several staff members clocked out on the afternoon July 18 and went to her home to help tidy up the flower beds — a gesture that went far beyond traditional care.
“I can’t thank them enough. They were my angels of mercy. I never would have dreamed they would do this for me. They were wonderful, and I don’t have enough words to express how thankful I am. My flowers have always been my pride and joy, and what they did for me was truly appreciated,” Waggle said.
The special patient was a bit suspicious initially when Garvin’s office called and casually asked if her flower beds still needed attention.
The gesture was recognized and appreciated by WVU Medicine Barnesville Hospital. “Their compassion and commitment exemplify what it means to care for the whole person — both in and beyond the exam room. This act of kindness is a powerful reminder of the difference empathy and community spirit can make,” the release said.
