Did you know Barnesville once sported a real motel? Well, it did. From about 1972 until 1993 the Binns Plaza Motel was located where the Barnesville McDonalds restaurant now stands.

Willis Binns of Flushing opened the motel on property he first developed for his new grocery store, Binns AG, in 1964. At the same time, he constructed Binns Plaza that today is home to a beauty shop, insurance agency and restaurant.

The motel units were constructed in a factory, consisting of multiple side-by-side units that were assembled on site similar to that of a modular home.

The motel was a logical development for a community that had no overnight accommodations in the 1970s. The rear of the promotional postcard touts the motel.

“Individually air conditioned and heated rooms, Color television, phone and ice. Wall to wall carpeting, luxurious vanity area separated from bath, fine restaurant, lounge and banquet room adjacent.”

By the early 90s, time had passed the Plaza Motel by. It was closed, torn down, and the property redeveloped.
