Education is ‘Fun” at Safety Day

Saturday, Barnesville Fire & EMS hosted the department’s annual Safety Day along West Church Street and at the fire station for youngsters and the “young at heart.” Fire Chief Tim Hall said this is the fourth or fifth year for the fun educational event.
Participants included the Barnesville Police Department, Belmont County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Health-Net (medical helicopter service), WVU Medicine Barnesville Hospital, Bel-O-Mar Regional Planning Commission and the Barnesville Women’s Club.
The department offered free hotdogs and popcorn while Martha’s food truck also offered a variety of food options.
There was a variety of fire and public safety vehicles to inspect throughout the event that ran until 1 p.m.
The Belmont County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9, Xyrem, took down Criminal Interdiction Unit Detective Brad Mackey during a demonstration, assisted by Deputy Tyler Grant and Detective Dustin Hildebrand.
The Sheriff’s Department’s Therapy K-9, Jersey, a regular at the courthouse, was accompanied by her handler, Deputy Jennifer Yuhase.

Barnesville’s Safety Pup (aka dispatcher Kathy Norris) was also on hand to the delight of youngsters.
Members of the Barnesville Women’s Club handed out educational materials, including helmets for new young department members at Safety Day.
“The first year we did this, it was just our department and the police,” Chief Hall said. “The event has grown ever since” suggesting the time may have arrived to move the annual event to Barnesville Memorial Park.
