Watt Center to Have Biggest Book Sale Yet

The Watt Center for History and the Arts, located at 511 Watt Avenue, is prepared for the annual book sale with an estimated 15,000 books available.
“We have more books up this year than in any previous year,” president Rick Hanse said. The books, now on the stacks for the sale, were initially stored in 1,000 boxes

The sale, with a tradition of more than 20 years, is set for 4-6 p.m. Wednesday; 4-8 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday during the Pumpkin Festival. Prices are $1.00 for hardbacks and $0.50 for paperbacks.
Wednesday will have a $5 entry fee, while all other days are admission free. Tote bags will be provided for the popular “fill a bag for a dollar” on Sunday. Proceeds are used to pay utilities, to maintain building upkeep and to meet general operating expenses.

A variety of books have been generously donated for the sale. Categories include fiction, history, biographies, travel, poetry and children’s books, just to name a few.
Watt Center secretary, Mary Sidwell, said the book sale is a great opportunity for buyers to see the historic building. Dating back to about 1900, the facility was used as the offices for the Watt Car and Wheel Company which employed many local workers.
“It’s amazing that very little has been done to change the interior,” she said. “There are pressed tin ceilings, wood paneling and several vaults. It’s fun to come in and just wander around, even if you don’t buy books.”
