Storytelling, County GIS Maps and Land Patents: The Seven Ranges and Belmont County, Ohio

This online talk will unveil a new map resource prototype for anyone researching the Seven Ranges or ancestors who purchased land from the U.S. federal government in the area from 1785 to around 1835. Register for the talk to get early access to the prototype.
The talk will take place between 1-2 p.m. October 30.
The Seven Ranges is a section of eastern Ohio that was the first to be surveyed after the Land Ordinance of 1785. It created formal systems for surveying, selling, and settling the land, allowing them to raise needed revenue after the Revolutionary War.
What started as personal projects for two people working independently with pen and paper has evolved into a digitized, color-coded, linked, multi-county mapping system. It’s amazing what people with shared interests in local history can accomplish and learn together when they combine their research and technical skills! This talk will unveil the prototype for the Substack genealogy community.
Register here for the Zoom link to the talk. Your confirming email will also include a link to the new map resource prototype you can explore.
This program is free and open to the public. The recording will be emailed to Projectkin members shortly after the program concludes.
About the speakers: Crystal Lorimor is known for her writing about Eastern Ohio in “Creighton Cabin”. She is also the Executive Director of the Community Improvement Corporation of Belmont County, Ohio. In that capacity, she discovered the opportunity to collaborate with two colleagues who shared an interest in family history and a vision for how their data could unlock new resources. Joining her for this presentation will be her colleagues on this project, the Belmont County GIS team led by Anthony Atkins and Belmont County Recorder Jason Garczyk.
