The late John Mattox, second from left, local representative for the Ohio National Road Association John S. Marshall, center, and Kirkwood Township Trustee Tim Lara are shown dedicating the Hendrysburg National Road Historic Marker.
The marker, located in front of the former Hendrysburg School, recognizes the community’s role in the history of the National Road and our nation’s history. The site was registered on the Historical Marker Database in May 2024.
The database notes the following:
- Location: The marker is at 35135 Main Street (County Route 807), along the former alignment of the National Road.
- Significance: It commemorates the founding of Hendrysburg by Charles Hendry in 1828, shortly after the National Road’s completion through the area.
- Hopalong Cassidy: The village is also noted as the birthplace of actor William Boyd, who played the fictional cowboy hero, Hopalong Cassidy.
- Brick segment: An historical brick segment of the National Road is also visible in Hendrysburg.
