Lawrence “Larry” Akers
Lawrence “Larry” Dean Akers, 71, of Bethesda, Ohio, passed away on November 26, 2025. Born on August 30, 1954, Larry was the son of the late Lowell (Anita) Akers and Ledra “Jean” (Gerald) Kinney. Larry lived a life full of humor, hard work, and love for his family and friends.
Larry spent most of his career as a truck driver, known by the handle “Sugar Bear”. This led him on travels across the entire United States, allowing him to visit every state on the mainland. His skill and dedication behind the wheel were recognized when he became a two-time West Virginia State Truck Driving Champion—an accomplishment that reflected his passion and pride in his work.
Beyond his career, Larry was a devoted family man and a great friend. Known for his playful spirit, sense of humor and quick wit, Larry never met a stranger. He loved Harley Davidson and earlier in his life, enjoyed himself a nice, long ride. Larry was also a devoted sports fan. He enjoyed watching all of his grandsons play ball, followed the Little League World Series every year and, despite the heartache over the years, remained a loyal Cleveland Browns fan.
Larry is survived by his son, Travis (Crystal) Akers; grandsons Clay, Braylon and Trey Akers; girlfriend, Pam Shumaker; siblings; Shawn (Ruby)Kinney, Keith (Jeanne) Kinney, Jodi (Harold) Jasper, Tony (Tammy) Akers, Terry Akers, Tom Akers, and Kim (Mark) Kurucz; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear, life-long friends who will cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Daryl, Mike, and Todd.
At Larry’s request, there will be no formal funeral services. A memorial celebration may be held at a later date.
