Local Students Hit the Stage Together

Three local students – one Barnesville student and two Union Local students – have combined their talents and formed a band that performs a mix of originals and covers across several genres.

Barnesville eighth grader Bryar Shilling, Union Local eighth grader Kennedy Wilkinson and Union Local senior Brendon McKeen make up Route 40 Band. The band officially got its start in late June.

The trio features Wilkinson on vocals, guitar and bass, Shilling on vocals, guitar and songwriting and McKeen on drums. While Wilkinson has been singing since she could talk, Shilling only began seriously singing about a year ago. Both started playing guitar about a year ago. McKeen has been drumming earnestly for about three years, though his family said he always seemed destined to be a drummer.

Wilkinson and McKeen have known each other for years, but Wilkinson didn’t know McKeen played drums until an open mic night at Route 40 LumberJaxe this past summer. Wilkinson performed there, and McKeen also took the stage, playing drums along with tracks. Soon after, Wilkinson had a gig at Chestnut Lanes in Barnesville where Shilling also performed. Wilkinson’s dad encouraged Shilling to attend the LumberJaxe open mic nights, and eventually all three played together.

Throughout the summer, the group performed weekly at Waterfront Hall’s Thursday open mic nights in Wheeling, WV. They later began appearing at the Main Street Barrel House in Barnesville for its open mic events as well.

The band credits much of its early success to Route 40 LumberJaxe and owners Stacey and Doug Longenette, which is how the trio created its name. The group also thanks Barrel House co-owner, Scott Whitacre, for his involvement and encouragement.

“That’s how we got our start,” Wilkinson said. “We kind of owe it all to those open mic nights.”

During the summer, they also play 7–9 p.m. every Wednesday at Route 40 LumberJaxe. Currently, listeners can catch the trio at 7 p.m. most Thursdays at the Barrel House. The group shares updates on Facebook and TikTok.

In addition to blending country, rock and pop, the band also performs Shilling’s originals. He recently released an album, The Calm Before the Storm, available on all major streaming platforms.

Shilling said he often writes songs at school or late at night, focusing on real-life issues such as heartbreak and loss. “The first song I ever released was ‘Gone to Remember,’” he said. “It was about my pap.”

The band practices in McKeen’s basement or garage, where they bring equipment, rehearse for two to three hours and spend time together. They usually focus on songs they plan to refine for upcoming shows.

McKeen said his favorite part of being in the band has been the love and support from his family.

Wilkinson added that although she has known the McKeens for a long time, getting to know Shilling has made the group feel like “one big family.” “They feel like they’re my family, and I’ve known them forever,” Wilkinson said. “It’s amazing getting to hang out with them and also doing what I love, playing music.”

Shilling said he enjoys performing his originals live, singing with his girlfriend Wilkinson and spending time with McKeen. The three joked that whenever Shilling makes a joke, McKeen adds a comedic drum hit.

The group has also performed at Christmas parties, the Barnesville Hee Haw Show, private events and the Pumpkin Festival Talent Show. Wilkinson noted that many people hear them at open mics and later ask the group to play at their events. She added that she is grateful for all the opportunities the band has had.

Parents of the band members praised the trio’s dedication. Shilling’s mother, Natasha Shilling, said the kids work hard. “It’s truly a blessing to see them all using their God given talents.
