Festival Leader Mourned

Members of the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival Committee and the community at large were shocked Friday hearing the news that festival president Tim Rockwell had died suddenly while on vacation with his wife, Tracey Childs Rockwell.

In response to the profound loss of their leader, the Pumpkin Festival Committee issued the following statement that was posted on the festival’s public Facebook page:

We are deeply devastated and beyond saddened to share the passing of Barnesville Pumpkin Festival President, Tim Rockwell.

Tim served as President of the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival Committee for over a decade and was a cornerstone of the festival and a true pillar of our community. His dedication, leadership, and passion helped shape the festival into the incredible event we know today—one that brings together tens of thousands of visitors each year and showcases the very best of Barnesville.

For many years, Tim worked tirelessly behind the scenes and on the front lines of the festival, giving his time, knowledge, and heart to ensure its continued success. His commitment went far beyond the event itself—he cared deeply about this community and the people in it, and that showed in everything he did.

The Barnesville Pumpkin Festival Committee is more than just a group of volunteers—it is a family. Tim was at the heart of that family. He brought people together, supported those around him, and created a sense of camaraderie and pride that will continue to live on within the committee for years to come.

Tim believed deeply in what the festival stood for. “It’s great to have everyone here walking around, having a good time, and smiling,” he once said. He often spoke about wanting to keep the festival going for future generations. “I remember coming here as a kid… I want to keep this going for the kids and generations to come.”

At the heart of it all, Tim’s greatest joy was simple—seeing kids smile. “That’s what we do it for… to see all the kids running around, smiling and having a good time.”

The Barnesville Pumpkin Festival has grown from its beginnings in 1964 into one of the premier events in Eastern Ohio, drawing over 100,000 attendees annually, and Tim played a vital role in continuing that legacy and tradition.

Tim was more than just a president—he was a leader, a mentor, and a friend to so many. His presence, guidance, and passion will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

While the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival tradition will continue, Tim’s legacy will live on in every smile, every reunion, and every moment that brings our community together during that last full weekend of September.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tim’s family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time.

Thank you, Tim, for everything you gave to this festival and this community. Your impact will never be forgotten.
