DeFelice Republican Commissioner Winner

Shadyside businessman Dominic DeFelice won Tuesday’s Republican primary election for Belmont County Commissioner. He will move on to the November General Election against Democrat Frank Shaffer, Jr. who was on the ballot unopposed on the Democratic ticket collecting 2,559 complimentary votes.

DeFelice collected 3,438 votes, 43.5 % of the 7,894 votes cast.  Bethesda resident and retired ODOT manager, David Schafer came in a close second at 3,231, 41% of the vote.

Former two-term commissioner Chuck Probst was a distant third with 1,225 votes or 15.5%.

DeFelice’s victory was the second time a candidate that was not endorsed by the Belmont County Republican Party came out on top. The party formally endorsed candidate David Schafer earlier this year.

Results are unofficial until the Belmont County Board of Elections meets on May 14 for the Official Canvass to certify the results of the May 5, 2026, Primary Election. The meeting will open at 8:30 a.m. and the board will reconvene at 4 p.m., said Eberle Ferrell, director.
