Hickenbottom Steps Into VP Role for Ohio GFWC

Peggy Hickenbottom, a member of the Women’s Club of Barnesville for more than 20 years, was recently elected Ohio General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Vice President at the group’s state conference.

Hickenbottom previously served as second vice president on the state level in addition to three terms as president of the local club and as director of Junior Clubs for the East Ohio River District.

In her former statewide role, Hickenbottom worked as dean of membership. As state vice president, she will serve as chair of all state chairmanships and work directly with committee leaders.

GFWC elected Hickenbottom in April following the nomination committee’s nod. Ohio’s four districts reviewed candidates before a statewide election determined the final selection.

Hickenbottom said she accepted the role to continue growing as a leader and to serve as a role model for others.

She added the support from the local club and members statewide makes the appointment especially meaningful.

“It’s a great feeling,” she said.

Clubs focus on service projects, fundraising and community charitable donations. Members’ hours volunteering are also recorded with all of this activity reported to the national federation.

Hickenbottom said that even small contributions from local clubs can have a broader impact.

She noted the organization’s work includes human trafficking awareness, advocacy for children, library education initiatives and health and wellness programs.

Hickenbottom hopes to increase awareness and provide resources to help clubs expand their impact, particularly in advocating for seniors and veterans.

Hickenbottom said every club member plays an important role, regardless of their individual tasks.

“Being part of the community is in the heart of all of us,” she said.
