Baseball: Rox Beat Colts 19-5 for Second Straight Win
The Barnesville Shamrocks (18-6 overall) get their second-straight victory against the visiting Meadowbrook Colts (11-11 overall) in an 19-5 scoring effort at home on Wednesday, May 13.
Per Ohio High School Athletic Association rules, the game only lasted four and a half innings due to the 10+ run mercy rule in place for both baseball and softball.
Most of the runs for the Shamrocks came in the bottom of the first inning. After an RBI triple by junior Austin Warner, the Colts took an early 1-0 lead. But, that didn’t last for very long.
The bottom of the first saw Barnesville score 12 earned runs thanks to hits from almost the entire lineup including senior utility player Max Miller, junior outfielder Brayden Watters, junior shortstop Blake Burkhart, senior pitcher Dylan Blon, sophomore third baseman Jaxten Swallie and others.
Things got so out of hand quickly for Meadowbrook’s defense that Head Coach Joseph M. Voytko changed pitchers from senior right-handed Braylon Lowery to junior Kam Winnett.
A double and one final RBI from sophomore first baseman Gunner Dudzik would cap the Shamrock’s offensive dominance in the first.
In the top of the second inning, the Colts were able to get back onto the board. With the bases loaded, an RBI from sophomore Brady Arnold allowed senior Devin Wells to score.
The pitching for both ballclubs wasn’t particularly the best. Starting on the mound for Barnesville was Blon who didn’t record any strikeouts and allowed four Colts to walk.
Blon retired in the top of the third inning after two earned runs were scored by Meadowbrook. Taking his place was freshman right-handed Bentley Stephen. With the bases loaded, Stephen got to work quickly and tallied two strikeouts.
The Shamrocks were able to escape the inning without letting any more Colts get to home plate. In the bottom of the third, junior third baseman Parker Sobutka scored thanks to a Rox hit—making the score 13-4.
Stephen struck out two more of Meadowbrook’s batters in the top of the fourth, and in the bottom Barnesville scored six more runs on the evening.
Watters recorded an RBI double that allowed senior outfielder Jack Anderson to score. Stephen was walked, allowing for Miller to score with the bases already loaded.
Sobutka was walked and Watters scored making it 16-4 Rox. Swallie had an RBI double, and junior catcher Aidan Caldwell tallied two RBI’s to make it 19-4.
The Colts had multiple runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth, but were only successful in scoring one to make the final score 19-5 in favor of the Shamrocks.
To conclude not only its week but also its regular season, Barnesville will face the Monroe Central Seminoles on the road Friday commencing at 5 p.m.
Meadowbrook is back in action tomorrow evening with a home game against the Caldwell Redskins. That contest will also start at 5 p.m.
