William Wesley “Bill” Ferrell
William Wesley “Bill” Ferrell, 82, of Belmont, Ohio passed away on Friday, June 5, 2026 at Liza’s Place of Valley Hospice, Wheeling, West Virginia. He was born December 15,1943 in Key Ridge, Ohio, a son of the late Dorothy Winzenreid Ferrell.
Bill learned the meat cutting trade while he was a student at Ohio State University. He worked at the former Hart’s, later Big Bear Store and retired after 39 years at various Kroger Stores in the Ohio Valley. He was a 1961 graduate of Bellaire High School and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Bill loved his horses, gardening and everything related to “Green,” meaning John Deere. He served 18 years on the Belmont County Fair Board and as an advisor for the Belmont County 4-H.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, William E. and Sophia Schemrich Winzenreid; a son-in-law, Scott Smutney.
Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara Greenlee Ferrell of Belmont; two children, Pamela Smutney of Bridgeport, Ohio and Dale (Emily) Ferrell of Ann Arbor, Michigan; grandchildren, William and Eva Smutney, Noah, Lucy, Teresa and Victoria Ferrell; three nieces, three nephews, many cousins and great-nieces and -nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville. Funeral Services will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Arthur Carr officiating. Burial will follow in Rock Hill Cemetery, Bellaire, Ohio.
