This weekend, the Epworth Park Cottage Owners Association will celebrate the 36th annual Chautauqua Days Festival at Bethesda.
From 1891 until World War II, the park annually hosted a weeklong Chautauqua program. This image from the 1937 program provides an insight into the educational programming made famous by the Chautauqua movement. Major Joe Hanley, the statesman, later served as Lieutenant Governor of New York, while Eugene Laurant was a famous magician of the day.
Some nights were devoted to musical groups including The Imperial Singers who provided the program on the opening night.
Note that although Epworth Lake is profiled offering swimming, boating and fishing, these activities were suspended each Sundays.
Local advertising was also found throughout the printed programs in those days, primarily featuring businesses from Belmont County.
