Holiday Weekend Storm Claims Child’s Life
WOODSFIELD – In a July 6 release by Monroe County Sheriff Derek said, “On July 5, 2026, at approximately 7:14 p.m., Monroe County Dispatch received a report of a missing 5-year-old boy in the Lewisville community following a recent flash flood event.”
”Deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, along with members of the Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department, responded immediately and began an extensive search of the area. The search effort included Deputies, firefighters, and numerous members of the Lewisville community.”
“Following a coordinated search, the body of the missing 5-year-old was located in a creek drainage area near State Route 78.”
According to the relase, “ the incident remains under investigation by Detectives with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. At this time, no additional information is being released”.
An obituary for the victim was published by the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield.
In a separate incident in the eastern half of the county, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office & Local Fire Departments Conduct Flood Rescue Along Sunfish Creek.
According to Sheriff Norman, “ on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at approximately 5:50 P.M., the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting that a juvenile female had fallen into the flood-swollen waters of Sunfish Creek.”
“Upon arrival, deputies learned that an adult male had entered the creek and successfully reached the juvenile. Although both individuals made it to the opposite side of the creek, they were unable to safely return due to rapidly rising water.”

And on Saturday night, following a storm that dropped between two- to three-inches of rain in a short period of time, flooding occurred along the South Fork of the Captina and Cranenest creeks with water over SR 800 and several other roads in the valley south of Somerton.
Flooding along this stretch of highway was also reported on Sunday afternoon.
