Hospital Receives $1 Million Energy Efficiency Grant

Press Release

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Department of Development today announced more than $7.5 million in grants to help 11 organizations across the state reduce energy usage, lower utility costs, and improve the efficiency of their facilities.

The funding comes from the latest round of the Advanced Energy Fund, which provides grants to help businesses, nonprofits, municipalities, and educational institutions complete projects designed to reduce energy usage and associated costs.

“The best investments we can make in energy efficiency do more than just save a few bucks on energy bills. They help some of Ohio’s most important community pillars put more of their resources toward the people they serve,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Department of Development. “From hospitals and schools to local governments and small businesses, these investments will deliver long-term savings while ensuring the places we call home have every opportunity to thrive.”

Eleven organizations across 11 counties are receiving awards this round for energy efficiency improvements, including LED lighting, HVAC upgrades, building automation systems, chillers, solar energy installations, and more.

To date, the program has awarded more than $32 million to 40 organizations in 29 counties. Previous awards include a $1.3 million grant to help the East Palestine City School District complete major energy efficiency upgrades at all district buildings, and a $910,000 grant awarded to the Montgomery County Convention Facilities Authority as part of a larger, $45 million renovation project at the Dayton Convention Center.

All projects selected for funding must demonstrate a reduction of at least 15 percent in energy usage, ensuring a tangible and measurable impact on energy efficiency in their communities.

The following entities will receive grant funds:

Barnesville Hospital Association, Inc. (Belmont County) will receive $1 million to replace windows, improve the building envelope, install a high-efficiency chiller, upgrade LED lighting and controls, and optimize HVAC controls in the emergency department. The project is expected to yield annual utility energy savings of 20.3 percent.

Other area grants include

Ohio Health Research Institute (Guernsey County) will receive $641,500 to install LED lighting, optimize chilled water systems, improve kitchen ventilation, upgrade HVAC equipment, and complete additional energy efficiency improvements. The project is expected to yield annual utility energy savings of 19.6 percent.

Muskingum County Board of Commissioners (Muskingum County) will receive $1 million to complete HVAC, lighting, window, and building automation upgrades at the county courthouse, health department, and juvenile detention center. The project is expected to yield annual utility energy savings of 28.7 percent.

Marietta College (Washington County) will receive $1 million to complete campus-wide lighting upgrades involving nearly 4,000 lights, along with HVAC improvements. The project is expected to yield annual utility energy savings of 15.6 percent.
