Steed Family Tradition: Sharing Halloween Fun With Community
Since 2019, Fran and Jason Steed, along with other family members, have transformed their home on N. Arch St. into a spooktacular Halloween display with games, prizes, and candy. In fact, over 500 people visited their display this year during trick-or-treat night, and they handed out 10 huge bags of candy. This year’s theme was Dark Harvest, featuring a cornfield, scary-dressed skeletons, scarecrows, and a huge spider, built by Jason Steed.
Fran Steed stated that “the singing pumpkins and the scarecrows on the front porch were the start.” Then, each year the display continued to grow. Past displays have included witch, pirate, circus, and cemetery themes.
Fran shared that the family begins planning the Halloween display in May or June. She continued that they try to repurpose items from previous years. For example, the skeletons were redressed with different clothes. The 500 cornstalks for the Dark Harvest field were donated from the Oglebay Fort Henry Days.
Fran, Jason, and their family members enjoy creating this Halloween display each year so that kids have something fun to do in their community. Fran stated that the neighbors enjoy seeing all the trick-or-treaters in their costumes and having a good time.
