There were no bar codes to scan for Cleo Hinkle, cashier at the M-K Supermarket at 123 N. Chestnut Street, in this ca. 1960s Barnesville Enterprise archives photo. She was ready for area housewives to purchase everything for the family’s Thanksgiving dinner.
The McClelland-Kennard Stores firm, headquartered in Barnesville and supplying groceries to over 65 company-owned stores, operated out of a large warehouse that today houses Village Hardware and Rental.
According to our friends at A I, “In 1960, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people cost around $6.71, while a restaurant meal at a place like Howard Johnson’s could be as little as $2.25. The inflation-adjusted cost for a 1960 home dinner would be about $43.24 today.”
For context, the federal minimum wage was $1 an hour at that time.
Economists estimate the cost of a classic Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people this year at $55.18, down about five percent from 2024, due to lower turkey prices.
