Honoring 30 Years of the Hee Haw Show and Its Charity

February is usually the month to express our love for one another, especially on Valentine’s Day. But when a community member is in need, Barnesville comes together to love and support that member regardless of month or day.

This past November, the Hee Haw Gang performed its annual show to celebrate Christmas, but also support another community member facing cancer — Jay Lucas. Jay is a 1981 Barnesville graduate and played football when in school. Raising the most ever in one show, the proceeds went to help Jay and his family as he battles cancer.

Each year, Hee Haw, a poem written by Marie Inherst, is read to remind the audience of why the Hee Haw Show began. The Mayhugh family lost one of their own, Melody, to cancer.

Show Director, Melinda Anderson, added a new tradition. Anderson recalled hearing I’m Gonna Love Through It on American Idol. The lyrics resonated with her.

Each year this song will be sung by a different performer. Anderson stated that she hopes that this song will be a reminder to reach out for help.

This year Natasha Shilling performed the song.

The audience members’ support was remarkable. The Barnesville High School auditorium was packed. Many came early to eat homemade food and participate in a silent auction.

Mike Clift said, “I’m here to support Melinda Anderson. To devote all this time is a labor of love.”

Dennis Hickenbottom started coming 15 years ago to hear his three granddaughters sing. Many others have attended several times.
