Union Local Contest Winners Recognized

Union Local Future of Belmont County Youth Contest winners honored. (L-R) Prinicpal Ron Bober, Belmont County Treasurer and President of  Create Our Future Katherine Kelich, 2nd Place for the 1-4 grade section Wesley Skinner, 3rd Place for 1-4 grade section Joseph Dorff, 1st Place winner for the high school section Sarah Dorff, CIC Director Crystal Lorimor and Principal Tom Daley.  

The non-profits Create Our Future, and the Belmont County Community Improvement Corporation held an essay contest for Belmont County youth. Thanks to sponsors, first place in each age group won $300; second place won $200; third place won $100.

We are especially proud of our Union Local Jets!

Grades 1- 4 were to write about what they liked best about where they lived. Union Local Elementary had two winners:

• 2nd Place – Wesley Skinner, 2nd Grade

• 3rd Place – Joseph Dorff, 3rd Grade

Grades 9-12 were to explain what type of business, activity, or recreation they would like to develop in Belmont County that would make them stay or return to the area. They were also to explain what role they would play in that development. Our Union Local High School Winner was:

• 1st Place – Sarah Dorff, 12th Grade

OSUE SafeSitter Class – February 17  

Ohio University Extension is offering a class for students aged 11 to 14.  The instructor-led class is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises. Students even get to use manikins to practice rescue skills.

The class will take place at Ohio University Extension 45422 Roscoe Road, St. Clairsville, Monday, February 17 from 10:00 – 3:30. Participants should bring a sack lunch to the program. 

Registration is required by February 3. Organizers note, classes fill up quickly. Call the Ohio State University Extension office at (740) 695-1455 to reserve a spot. The cost is $60 per student.

LifeWise Salutes Students of Character

Lifewise Barnesville recently posted photos of the program’s November and December Students of Character. They may be viewed on the group’s Facebook page.     

Barnesville PTA Sets Program Dates

The Barnesville Parent Teachers Assocation recently set dates for several current school year events. They are:

Little Ceasar’s Pizza Pick up,  Wednesday, March 12

Mother/Son Dodgeball, Friday, March 21

Father/Daugher Dance, Friday, April 25

Carnival Day, Friday, May 9.   

Beallsville School Cancer Fundraiser

Beallsville School will host youth Basketball games on Saturday, January 25 starting at 8:30 in the morning and continuing until 7:00 in the evening. The event will include a raffle, bake sale and collecting donations to support a 4th grade Beallsville student that was recently diagnosed with brain cancer, Jaxton Palmer is is a member of the Beallsville 3/4 Boys Basketball team. These proceeds will assist the family with paying for travel and medical expenses for trips  to Morgantown five days weekly  over a five week period.

Organizers raised $4,818 for Jaxton’s family’s expesnes at this event.

Heritage Early Learning Center Camp Fundraiser

The centers are currently conducting a Sarris Easter Candy Fundraiser to support students from the St. Clairsville and Barnesville campuses pay for summer camp.

A whopping 35 percent of each order goes to the registration project. Orders must be placed by March 10 with a delivery date of April 10.

South Central, Ohio Farm Bureau Scholarships

High school seniors of members of the South Central Power Company Coop who plan to attend college or a technical school next year are eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship from South Central Power Company. The deadline to apply is February 1. The application may be accessed here.   

Students of Ohio Farm Bureau members are now open on the Farm Bureau website. If your family is not a member, you may join the organization before applying at ofbf.org/join.
