March – National Social Work Month
Dear Editor,
On Behalf of the Ohio University Eastern Social Work Department
March is National Social Work Month, a time to recognize a profession that quietly, consistently, and courageously strengthens the fabric of our communities. This year’s national theme, “Social Workers: Uplift. Defend. Transform.” captures not only the heart of the profession, but the daily reality of social workers serving throughout the Ohio Valley and across our nation.
For more than a century, social workers have worked to improve human well-being, advocate for justice, and ensure that every person’s basic needs are met. Today, more than 810,000 social workers across the United States serve in hospitals, schools, child welfare agencies, community centers, and federal, state, and local governments. In each of these spaces, they uplift individuals and families during life’s most difficult moments, defend the dignity and rights of vulnerable populations, and help transform systems to be more equitable and compassionate.
Social workers do not choose this profession by chance. They are driven by a deep commitment to service and guided by a Code of Ethics that calls them to uphold human dignity, pursue social justice, and stand for equity in every community. They are often on the front lines supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges, assisting those recovering from substance use disorders, advocating for children and families, helping veterans, and walking alongside people navigating trauma, grief, discrimination, and systemic barriers.
In times of profound change and challenge, whether responding to public health crises, natural disasters, economic instability, or rising social tensions, social workers bring hope and healing. They defend immigrants, LGBTQ individuals, and others facing discrimination or poverty. They uplift essential social safety net programs. They work to confront oppression and racism. They transform lives not only through direct service, but also through policy advocacy, education, and community leadership.
Here in the Ohio Valley, we see the impact of social work every day. Our graduates serve in schools, health care systems, behavioral health agencies, and community organizations throughout the region. They are trusted professionals who strengthen families, stabilize communities, and help individuals build brighter futures.
As we recognize National Social Work Month this March, we invite the community to join us in celebrating and supporting the vital work of social workers. Their commitment to uplifting, defending, and transforming lives makes our communities stronger, safer, and more compassionate places for all.
Sincerely,
Dr. Warren Galbreath, Dr. Richard W. Greenlee, and Professor Tracy A. Pritchard, LISW-S
