Twenty Years Ago – 2006

BHS senior Jayme Detling captured the Division III state title for the 300-meter hurdles at the State Track Meet in Columbus Friday. He also finished 5th in pole vault competition.

Barnesville is the home to the fastest shrimp eater in the Midwest as Val Moscato won the Old Bay Peel and East Shrimp Contest in Milwaukee. He mastered 31 shrimp in five minutes.

Someone chose to dump huge amounts of garbage instead of reusable castoffs in the donation bins at the Salvation Army Store at 145 W. Main.

Owners of Steele Insurance, formerly Hanlon Insurance, will close local operations on E. Church Street and consolidate it with their St. Clairsville office.

The Barnesville Pool will sponsor Moonlight Swims on Monday evenings from 8-10 through August 14. Admission is $3.

Special services on June 11 will celebrate the 175th anniversary of Concord Presbyterian Church near Centerville.

Thirty-five Years Ago – 1991

The Barnesville Board of Education selects veteran educator and Bethesda resident David Wilson for school superintendent.

The Development Council releases a study that reveals local businesses reinvest over $125,000 in the Barnesville Community each year in donations, contributions and supporting advertising.

Family and friends gathered at a reception Sunday afternoon at First Presbyterian Church to honor Agnes Timmons for 31 years of community service as teacher and coach in the Barnesville School system.

One of the largest crowds ever for the Somerton Alumni Banquet saw 187 attend the event at Somerton Fire Hall. Bill Truex received the Alumnus of the Year Award.

Golden Wedding anniversaries profiled this week include Mr. and Mrs. Ab McCort, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wheeler and Mr. and Mrs. William Nesbitt.

A resolution honoring the legacy of Mrs. Mildred Rezabek, a founder of the Belmont County Historical Society, was passed by that organization. Mrs. Rezabek died on May 23 in Michigan where she made her home for the past few years, but she was returned here and laid to rest in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Somerton.

Sixty Years Ago – 1966 

Local auto dealer Charles Doan is heading up Barnesville efforts to raise funds for the Belmont County Community Improvement Corporation, a nonprofit organization tasked with bringing new industrial jobs to the county.

Work is underway paving lots the new Bob’s Chevrolet location east of town in anticipation of the firm’s grand opening.

C.A. House Music Company is locating in Barnesville and will be affiliated with the Millard Neal Studio of Music, 323 E. Main.

Graduates of the Olney Friends School Class of 1916 held a memorable 50th reunion with 11 out of the original graduates present.


The Kirkwood Twp. VFD will hold its annual Carnival and Homecoming at the school grounds in Hendrysburg, June 15-18. Carnival rides will be provided by Showtime Amusement Company.

The Sunday-Wednesday feature film at the Morristown Drive-In is “The Singing Nun,” staring Debbie Reynolds.

Eighty-five Years Ago – 1941

Council voted to extend the closing time from 11:00 to 11: 45 p.m. for places selling intoxicants.

Despite the heavy rains which temporally ruined flowers in Barnesville even as they saved the gardens, the flower show in progress now at the Community Center (today’s Barnesville Antique Mall) is one of the most beautiful and unique events sponsored by the Barnesville Garden Club.

Definite assurance that the city park swimming pool will open soon was given a large delegation of youngsters who attended council meeting Tuesday night to urge the city fathers to open the pools. Spokesman for the youngsters was William Chaney, son of former Solicitor J. H. Chaney.

This week’s profile, “Interesting Neighbors of Yours,” profiles Edgar Ward, veteran Barnesville rural mail carriers who retired last Saturday after almost a half century of faithful public service – 23 years as a country schoolteacher and 23 years as a rural mail carrier at Barnesville.

Grading on the road that runs from Route 147 at Belmont Grange Hall to Waterworks Road off the South Lincoln Avenue extension has been finished under a government WPA project.

Miss Roberta Bishop, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Bishop, will take a position soon in the Mayfair Beauty Salon. She is a graduate of the Columbus Beauty School.

One Hundred-ten Years Ago – 1916

From the Whetstone 

The local lodge of Golden Eagle observed last Sunday as their annual Memorial Day, where the graves of departed members were suitably decorated. In the morning, the lodge attended the Main Street Methodist Church in a body (as a group).

Dr. J.W. Wellons and wife, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Griffin, will leave here Sunday morning in Dr. Wellon’s automobile for Mansfield where the Griffins will visit with their daughter. Dr. Wellons and wife will go on to Painesville for a few days where their daughter, Miss Anna is a student at Erie College.

For Sale at a Bargain – 1915 model Indian motorcycle fully equipped with three speeds and side car. Call on or address Fred Hunt of the First National Bank.

Pope Benedict has issued an edict forbidding any society under parochial jurisdiction from giving any entertainment where there is dancing. The congregations in many of the large cities are surprised at this action.
