Saturday night, students, family and friends of the the former Somerton School will gather at the Somerton Firehall to remember their beloved school that was located on Johnson Ridge Road between Somerton and Temperanceville.
Alumni of Somerton High first gathered at Detling’s Grove just east of Somerton in 1897, five years after the first commencement of 1892. That group met for seven years.
The Somerton Alumni Association reorganized in 1925. Alumni banquets took place until 1942 when the event was suspended for World War II. In 1948, six years later, the group reemerged.
This year marks the 78th consecutive year for the current gathering.
Somerton/Somerset Township operated a high school from 1891-1951when the state closed the school. The Johnson Ridge building opened in the fall of 1940 serving as a high school for 11 years. Somerton Elementary continued to operate out of the Johnson Ridge building until May 1970 when it was also closed.
