For 53 years the second weekend of August was “carnival time” in Somerton as the community gathered at the Somerton fire station to enjoy activities, partake of good food, and raise funds for the local volunteer fire department. Saturday night was the highlight of the festival with a parade through town!
The last parade was an event of August 10, 2013. Firemen chose as the final parade marshals three longtime Somerton residents: Richard Steele, Charles and Mary Lou Bewley.
The first festival was staged in 1960, five years after the volunteer fire department was organized in 1955 – 71 years ago.
