Twenty Years Ago – 2006
After 76 years spanning from the Great Depression and World War II, the Walter Thomas clothing store on E. Main will close its doors one final time on August 26.
With a 47 percent increase in its current health insurance costs, the village will begin the process to find another provider at a lower rate.
A five-generation photo profiles the family of Margaret Warfield McCort, retired employee of the former G.C. Murphy Store.
Barnesville resident Virginia “Ginny” Bell will perform her Tina Turner routine at the final Showcase concert of the season, August 10, at “Community Arts Place” on East Main Street at Bethesda Street Extension.
Thirty-five Years Ago – 1991
The third time proves successful as voters in the Barnesville School District approve a 9-mill continuing operating levy at a special election by a 777-705 tally.
Barnesville resident Denny Hunstman is profiled. He is now on the heart transplant list at The Ohio State University Hospital.
A large crowd showed up last Saturday to scrub down the former B & O railroad depot and cut brush and trees along the right-of-way from the station to the tunnel.
The Barnesville Victorain Theatre Company’s next production will be “Oklahoma.” Auditions will take place at the high school auditorium on Sunday.
Barnesville Rotary bids its first female member goodbye. Laurie Rinehart of Barnesville Hospital is moving to Columbus and returning to school.
The historic home of Lee and Joyce Young at 303 Church Street in Morristown was heavily damaged by fire Tuesday.
Belmont Bridge work is just about complete. The old railroad bridge is gone, replaced by fill and pavement.
Sixty Years Ago – 1966
A page one story profiles the Bethesda Farmer’s and Sportsmen’s Club located near Speidel.
Mrs. William Kearns of Vine Street was named “Outstanding Gardener” for this region by the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs. She has been a member of the Barnesville Garden Club for 31 years.
In addition to a high school building bond issue in November, voters will also decide a 1.6 mill levy for operations in the Barnesville School District.
Winner of the Pick Hotels/Motels weekend vacation giveaway this week from the Barnesville Chamber of Commerce is E. D. Stonebraker of Belmont.
Millard Neal has accepted a position as part-time band director for Flushing High School. He also owns his own music studio here and is organist-choir director of the First Presbyterian Church.
The silver wedding anniversary of former Somerton couple, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Mann, is profiled. They owned and operated Mann’s Feed and Supply in Somerton before moving west to Las Vegas two years ago.
Eighty-five Years Ago – 1941
The Jersey Day exhibit is acclaimed as ‘best in Ohio outside of the state fair.’ A field of 73 fine jerseys competed, and a crowd of 500 attended the event.
Editor Ray Palmer opines that “Jersey Field Day” could become something real big, suggesting 4-H competition, parades, speeches, etc.
The Ohio Secretary of State determines that on the 1933 wet-dry vote, beer may be sold in Warren Township but not liquor.
Miss Edith Berry has accepted a position at the Somerset Twp. High School where she will teach English, Latin, and natural sciences. The Ohio University grad taught at Centerville’s Smith Twp. High for the past two years.
A group of local volunteer firemen are considering purchasing, at their own expense, attractive “dress parade” uniforms which may be worn when the new fire truck is taken to celebrations in other towns.
The 1941 Schafer Reunion drew a crowd of 134 at Epworth Park.
One Hundred-ten Years Ago – 1916

The program for Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Day at Epworth Park next week will be a strong one.
The forthcoming marriage of Miss Matilda Eichhorn and Mr. Frank Oberts will be the leading society event next week. The nuptials will take please at the parents’ Barnesville home Thursday afternoon. She is instructor of German in Hammond, Ind., and a graduate of the University of Chicago. He is an educator in Kansas City, Mo., where the couple will make their home.
The closing days of the 2016 Barnesville Redpath Chautauqua are profiled.
The 37th annual Pennyroyal Reunion will take place at Fairview next Wednesday and Thursday.
J. W. Bradfield, Charles E. Bradfield, F. L. Harrison, Earl Watt, and their families, left Tuesday in their automobiles for a short stay at Deer Park, Md.
Mr. Ed Patterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Patterson of E. Main, and Miss Anna Havlin of West Walnut Street, were married at St. Clairsville Thursday last.
