In this this week’s Twice-Told Tales Redux for 2006, the Barnesville Enterprise reported the closure of the Main Street clothing store, Walter Thomas, which had served the community for 76 years

The store was founded in 1930 in the Conservative Arcade at 102 E. Main Street. Founder Walter Thomas later moved the business across the street to 115 E. Main Street, its longtime home.

After the founder’s passing, this portrait was located on the wall behind the register until the business closed its doors.

Older residents well remember gathering outside the store twice each year in February and August for the Barnesville Chamber of Commerce “Dollar Days” sale. The store opened early Friday morning for bargain hunters of women’s and men’s shoes along with men’s casual and dress clothes.
