Summer Lunch Program Director Expresses Gratitude
Over twelve weeks, the Barnesville Summer Lunch Program prepared and delivered 16,956 lunches to children in Barnesville, Bethesda, Belmont and Somerton.
“Thanks to all our volunteers who showed up faithfully to help prepare, pack, and deliver all those lunches,” Director Joyce Spigarelli said.
This program could not happen without the community’s cooperative efforts. The Barnesville Main Street United Methodist Church graciously allowed the program to use the kitchen and basement. Somerton Community Church prepared and packed the lunches for the children in the Somerton area. The Bethesda Christian Church’s congregation provided chip donations for the entire summer.
Belco Works also partnered with the lunch program, assisting with packing lunches two days each week. There were youth who not only helped daily but also unloaded the huge shopping orders from Save A Lot and Sam’s Club.
Finally, the volunteer drivers delivered the meals regardless of the weather. Many enjoyed interacting with the families.
“It was all those smiles, hugs, and good wishes from the children that made it all worthwhile,” Spigarelli said. “Being known as the ‘lunch lady’ is a good feeling.”
The program is funded entirely by private donations which are accepted throughout the year. Checks payable to Summer Lunch Program may be sent to P.O. Box 11, Barnesville, OH, 43713.
