This post card reveals how Main Street Hendrysburg looked in 1916 after the federal government paved the National Road with brick through all of Belmont County.

Shown on the right is the former Wilkins Store that was originally constructed for the the Disciples of Christ/Christian Church. On the left are the Masonic Lodge and just beyond it the I.O.O.F., Odd Fellows Lodge buildings.

In this week’s Twice-Told Tales from 1916, Mr. Buchanan, editor of the Barnesville Whetstone reported this:

The largest auto mobile parade in Ohio will be one of the features at the opening of the National Pike paving celebration October 5th in St. Clairsville. Former governor James A. Cox will make an address. The parade will start at Bridgeport and is anticipated to be 15 miles long consisting of between 1,500 and 2,000 automobiles. We reported recently the completion of the final section of brick paving in Morristown.
