A Roundabout Ahead?

Representatives from Belomar, the local transportation planning agency covering Belmont, Ohio and Marshall counties, will be on hand at Monday’s Barnesville Village Council meeting to answer questions about a proposal to create a roundabout at the intersection of East Main Street/SR 147 and Shamrock Drive.

Council members have received advance copies of a 14-page report prepared by the agency titled “Shamrock Drive and SR 147 Multimodal Roundabout Concept.”

The area is quite congested twice daily when school opens and dismisses at the nearby Barnesville High School and Barnesville Middle School campuses on Shamrock Drive. Sporting events at the two schools also add to congestion.

The study came about, in part, from the Safe Routes to School grant application to the Ohio Department of Transportation. The village partnered with Belomar on the applications.

According to the planning agency, 30 auto accidents with damage have occurred within 500 feet of the intersection in the past five years.

This is the second time the Ohio Department of Transportation has recommended traffic changes for the retail-heavy east side. Back in the mid-1990s, ODOT added the middle-turn lane to the area. During the planning stages, that project received considerable push back from residents in the area.

The council meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday night in the council chambers of the Municipal Building.

Also on tap Monday night will be the second reading of a resolution for emergency repairs of the main trunk sewer collection line.

Five ordinances increasing pay for village employees, the village administrator, fire and assistant fire chiefs as well increasing “per call’ rates for volunteer fire personnel will also be considered.

Chase Milburn of Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home will discuss “green burials”.

The meeting will also include an Executive Session related to the Ohio Revised Code 121.22 (G) 1 “to consider the employment of a public employee.

A copy of the full agenda along with copies of resolutions and ordinances under consideration are posted on the village website.
