Union Local Seeks Permanent Improvement Levy
Having failed twice in the last year to secure voter approval for large bond levies, the Union Local School Board voted April 23 to ask district residents to approve a 2-mill permanent improvement levy in November.
Union Local Schools Superintendent Zac Shutler told WTRF-TV News it would cost the average homeowner less than $9 a month, even less for those with senior citizen homestead exemptions.
The levy, if approved, would annually raise $896,000 for much needed repairs.
Shutler said the last time the district approved additional operating funds was in 1991.
Wednesday’s Storm Determined a Derecho
Barnesville High instructor and area weatherman Murray Stafford shared that the extreme weather experienced Wednesday evening was officially declared a Derecho by the National Weather Service.
On his Facebook page, Murray Stafford’s Ohio Valley Weather, he noted “the storm was over 100 miles wide and it traveled over 400 miles with winds in excess of 60 mph.”
Locally, a tree was down across the roadway on Shamrock Drive between the Olney Friends School and Barnesville Middle School campuses.
To the west, the Antrim Community Fire Department Chief reported an area farmer lost six cows to a lightning strike. They gathered under a tree for protection during the storm, a common practice for livestock that can end with deadly results.
High winds plagued the area Thursday as well while Friday afternoon’s surprise was hail some as large as ping pong balls.
