Ten Years Ago – 2005
A Beallsville school group proposes splitting the Monroe County School District into three parts – Beallsville area, Ohio River communities, and the remainder of the county.
The Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a weekly Barnesville Trivia contest on WBNV Radio. Sherrie Wharton, the chamber secretary, will join the radio staff each Tuesday morning and present the weekly question.
Local attorney Paul Bruce Jefferis, 53, died suddenly and unexpectedly Sunday.
Also passing this week were Maxine J. Forbes, 76, of Belmont, retiree from the office of the 4M Factory in Bethesda, and Rev. Eugene J. Brown, 96, of Caldwell and formerly of Quaker City, who served as a Methodist minister since 1941.
Pastor Frank Ledvinka will begin serving the Batesville United Methodist Church on July 3 as part of the Barnesville West Main/Batesville Charge. Until recently, he served the Bethel Church near Baileys Mills until its recent closing.
Guy “Don” and Shirley McEndree Snyder of Bethesda marked their golden wedding anniversary on May 28.
Kevin and Mary Devine of Barnesville marked their 25th wedding anniversary on June 28.
Twenty-five Year Ago – 1990
A full day of activities is planned by the Chamber of Commerce at Memorial Park on July 4. The evening will be capped by a fireworks display.
Plans are underway for the 86th Ohio Hills Folk Festival set for next week.
The Belmont County Historical Society will dedicate the new gazebo on the grounds of the Gay 90’s Mansion Museum, July 7.
A retirement party at Barnesville High School was a bittersweet farewell to Mrs. Mary Kinney, English teacher, and Mrs. Myra Thompson, school librarian for the past 21 years.
Work continues on the new Assembly of God Church on Shamrock Drive. Members expect to hold services in the new building by September.
Rolling Hills Landmark will soon open their new petroleum bulk plant located west of the Chevrolet dealership, Route 147 east of town.
Fifty Years Ago – 1965
Sixteen youngsters, ages 4 and 5, are the initial enrollees in the Federal Head Start Program here.
Barnesville superintendent of schools for the past 33 years, Jack Berryhill, has accepted the principal’s post at Brilliant High School, Jefferson County, and elementary principal for the past two years, Robert Mallernee, has accepted an elementary principal’s position with the Bellaire City Schools.
A distinguished Barnesville native, Dr. Frederick V. Hunt, son of Mrs. Fred Hunt, Cadiz, and the late Fred Hunt, is honored by having a ship commissioned in his name – the R/V F.V. Hunt. The R/V stands for research vehicle. Hunt, of Harvard University, is credited with the development of sonar during World War II.
A number of local Rotarians have compiled a 128.5-year perfect attendance record for weekly luncheon meetings. They are – Jack Berryhill, Foster Gasper, Silas Warfield, Alton Smith and Vernon Burkhart.
Somerton – The Somerton Little League is sponsoring a cake walk at the firehouse Saturday evening. Music will be provided by the Ray Graham Band.
Seventy-five Years Ago – 1940
Many local people took part in the annual meeting of the “Three Quarters Club” at Epworth Park last Thursday. The principal membership requirement is to be age 75 or more.
A committee consisting of over 140 members is formed to direct the city’s Pioneer Day Celebration that will take place in the downtown business district August 23-24.
John W. Wright, the most prominent stock dealer in eastern Ohio, died at his home in Belmont Wednesday age 86. He was in failing health for the past year.
Also passing this week was Mansel K. Ewers, 57, Goshen Twp. farmer and president of the Goshen National Bank. He was also long a member of the township school board.
A carrier pigeon from York, Pa. was caught at the T & A Rogers lumber mill last week by Frank Robinson.
In “News with our Neighbors”, the following Flushing businesses including the McNeal Dry Goods Store, Cloverland Dairy, The People’s Savings and Loan Company, C.W. Harris Hardware, Duke’s Chevrolet Dealership and Flushing Welding Company are profiled.
One Hundred Years Ago – 1915
From the Whetstone
The Barnesville Band has contracted with George Reynolds World’s Greatest shows to provide a week’s entertainment here beginning Monday, July 5th. The carnival will be located on the “Judkins lot in Corbin town” and will be open afternoons and evenings.
The marriage of Miss Amanda Hance of West Main and Dr. S.M. Sherman of Columbus occurred Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock at the home of her relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Taylor, also of W. Main. The young couple will make their home on 20th Street in Columbus after a train trip through the more important lake cities.
Dr. F.L. Hasbrouck and family expect to leave this week in their automobile for Highland, NY to visit his mother. They will also visit points along the route.
The stork visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Peddicord east of town on Monday and left a pretty little baby daughter as a welcome addition to their already interesting family.
