The development of deep coal mines in eastern Ohio in the early 20th century transformed many former small sleepy farming communities into bustling communities filled with immigrant coal miners and their families.
Such was the case for Lafferty in northern Union Township. Coal operators erected copycat houses, many duplexes, that they rented to their workers.
By the time miners paid their rent and covered often inflated prices of goods at the company store, there little was left of their paychecks.
