This coming weekend, Bethesda’s Epworth Park will be a beehive of activity as the Cottage Owners Association mark Chautauqua Days.
In the early days of the park that dates to 1870, the lake was a central feature of Epworth. Young and old bathed in the lake, as these children demonstrate posing near one of two bath changing houses where bathers changed from street clothes to modest, almost full body, swimming attire.
In a recent meeting with cottage owner leaders, old minutes were shared, revealing park rules forbidding swimmers to walk through the park in their swim clothes. Street clothing was required anywhere outside of the lake area!
