Ten Year Ago – 2005

Janet Hall Bridell, daughter of Herb and Mildred Hall, is photographed with employees of the local Riesbeck’s Market preparing the first batch of Herb Hall’s famous ham salad. Riesbeck’s paid $2,300 at a recent auction for the recipe.

Richard “Dickie” Pryor was recently named as the newest member or the Barnesville School Board. He fills the position vacated by Greg Wehr earlier this year. Pryor was unanimously selected by the board last week during a special meeting. 

March comes in like a lion as Mother Nature drops a significant snowfall on the area.

Florence Fitzpatrick, 93, retired cook for Barnesville Schools, died this past week.

Kenneth and Lois Fulton Kemp will mark their golden wedding anniversary March 12 with an open house at the Barnesville Senior Citizens Center.

Cadet Jason Bahmer, son of Lowell and Patty Bahmer, has been named to the Dean’s List at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is a 2004 graduate of Barnesville High School.

Twenty-five Year Ago – 1990

At the close of business February 20 at the Lincoln Branch, First National Bank, employees gathered to observe the 90th birthday of long-time friend and associate Harold Ellis. Ellis went to work for the bank in 1937 and spent 45 memorable years with the institution before retiring in 1982.

Belmont County Democrats will stage primary elections in May for the commissioner’s seat being vacated by Bob Olexo and the other for Common Pleas Judge.

Wilma Grimes, coordinator of the Showcase ’90 summer series at Memorial Park releases this year’s entertainment line-up.

Top spellers in this year’s Middle School Spelling Bee are Michelle Miller, Jennifer Collins, Tim Miller, and Lori Keylor.  Michelle and Jennifer will represent Barnesville at the county Bee on March 29.

Republican gubernatorial candidate George Voinovich, Cleveland, will be the featured speaker for the annual Belmont County Lincoln Day Dinner in March.

The Shamrock Wrestlers qualified six for the District event in Columbus – Travis Castello, Brian Jefferis, Chris Hanes, Stacy Castello, Gary Stephen and Jeff Powell.

Fifty Years Ago – 1965

Under the headline, “BHS has a wealth of basketball talent coming,” the Enterprise profiles the freshman, eighth and seventh grade squads.

Addressing an assemblage of over 140 persons at the school cafeteria Monday night, Robert Dowling, president of the Ohio Education Association, urged listeners to “be doers, not complainers”.

The 60th anniversary of Barnesville Aerie 337 (Eagles) will be celebrated March 9 through 14th with special events each night.

Seventy-five Years Ago – 1940

Approximately $4,000 has been collected in a drive to keep a hospital operating in the city. 

C.E. Beardmore and Paul Bertram of Marietta purchased the contents and furnishings of the Shannon Hotel from Richard King in a deal that closed last week.  The new owners took possession Saturday and are planning extensive remodeling and redecorating in the near future. The hotel building is leased from the Barnesville Hotel Company.

Vernon Hyde, associated with Bairs’ Furniture, is elected president of the Better Business Bureau for 1940.

Jean and Bonnie Huntsman, ages 12 and 4 respectively, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Huntsman of S. Chestnut Street, were both born on February 29 and have been cheated from a birthday except once in four years.    

Bob Peters, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Peters, left Wednesday morning for St. Petersburg, Florida to enter the Yankee Baseball team training camp. Yankees officials asked Peters to report immediately to the camp.

Jules Biron, a native of Belgium, died at his home on W. South Tuesday. He came to Barnesville in 1923 and resumed window glass operations in the Eastern Ohio Glass Plant on S. Gardner. The plant operated but for two more years before closing one final time.

One Hundred Years Ago – 1915

George B. Matthews of Matthews’ Furniture, local distributor for Victrola Record Players is staging a free Victrola Concert, Tuesday, March 9 between 7:00 and 9:00. “In order to give music lovers an opportunity to hear late Records, consisting of the newest and most popular selections…come in and spend a pleasant evening with us.”  Everybody invited and all are welcome.

The annual Embroidery Sale gets underway at 9:00 am, Wednesday, March 9 at Horner’s 5 and 10 Ct Store, 102 E. Main. 

Custom tailored, “made to measure” men’s clothes are priced between $16 and $35 at J.J. Kirk’s 137 E. Main.
