Watt Program Features “Stifel Indigo: An American Legend in Blue”

The Watt Center for History & the Arts in Barnesville will feature local native Terry Tickhill Terrell on Thursday, May 1 for a program titled “Stifel Indigo: An American Legend in Blue.”

In 1835 German immigrant Johann Ludwig Stifel started an indigo textile dyeing business in Wheeling, West Virginia. This presentation will explain how he and his successors built his business, eventually producing 3.5 million yards of indigo cloth each month.

Terry Terrell studied at The Ohio State University. In 1969 she became a member of the first team of women to visit the South Pole. She received a B.S.in Botany from Ohio State in 1971, and a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Georgia in 1976. In retirement, Terry is pursuing various lines of quilt history research and has given numerous presentations on textile history, published several articles, and created the Floral Motifs on Early Chintz website.
