National Road Yard Sale: May 28 to June 1

The 22nd National Road Yard Sale Festival is set for May 28 to June 1. According to an announcement, the event spans 824 miles from St. Louis to Baltimore, Maryland. Dubbed the Thrill of the Hunt, the festival allows communities along the historic byway to host various events.

Participants can expect to find a wide range of items for sale, including antiques, furniture, housewares and collectibles. Some locations will offer Amish treats. Many residents will hold yard sales, while others will provide vendor space to attract more bargain hunters.

The National Road, now known as U.S. 40, was constructed between 1811 and 1834 to connect to western settlements. It was the first federally funded road in U.S. history. U.S. 40 runs parallel to Interstate 70 and passes through Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.

A yard sale sign along U.S. Route 40 in Cambridge is place near one of the original national road markers. The four-day-long yard sale spans from Missouri to Maryland and offers visitors a chance to explore the National Road and find hidden treasures along the way.

According to the announcement, the goal of the sale is to encourage community participation, creating a long festival along the route. Past events have drawn thousands, providing local residents with opportunities to earn extra income and support local attractions and businesses.

Communities are encouraged to begin planning their events now. Individual sales may vary, with some starting a few days early. Many community events are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, offering a chance for visitors to explore the National Road and its historic sites, unique stores, and restaurants.
