Neptune Raises Record Watermelon

Fresh off a win with his King Pumpkin entry at the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, New Concord’s Bill Neptune, traveled south to claim another crown – and a world record – with a “traditionally grown” watermelon at the Allardt, Tennessee, Pumpkin Festival Saturday.

Last week, Neptune shared that he had a still growing huge watermelon at home and that he’d focused on it more than the giant pumpkins this year.

Saturday’s was the 34th annual Allardt Pumpkin Festival. The largest pumpkin entered was a 1,196 pound winner grown in West Virginia, while the largest green squash, grown nearby in Kentucky, tipped the scales at 1,409 pounds.

The festival is an official weigh-off site for the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth.

Like the Barnesville festival, Allardt’s includes a parade with many floats and entries pulled by antique tractors, an antique and classic car show and a 5K run. Learn more about the festival here.

Allardt is a small rural town of 500 located north west of Knoxville, south of the Kentucky border.
