Captina Conservancy Festival Celebrates Captina Creek

Captina Conservancy invites the public to celebrate the heritage and environment of Captina Creek this coming Saturday afternoon.
Captina Conservancy’s fourth annual Captina Creekin Festival will take place from noon to 3 p.m. , October 25 along the South Fork of Captina Creek, 55800 New Castle Rd., Jerusalem.
The festival will feature the return of Steven Moore and Almost Famous band providing live bluegrass music, an art auction, hayrides along the creek, local food, educational activities and more. Captina Conservancy staff encourage visitors to bring a camp chair or blanket and enjoy the day.
The festival is a celebration of Captina Creek, executive director Ellie Ewing said.
“We have activities that celebrate the natural environment; the animals, the plants,” she said.
She added the festival celebrates the heritage of the people and communities that lived around the creek.
Entry to the event is free. Food will be available for purchase or bid on auction items while at the festival.
The inspiration for the event comes from the local people who own this “beautiful property” and want to share it with the public,” Ewing said.

An addition to the festival this year will be provided by education and history students from Ohio University Eastern who will help with a storytelling booth. The booth will be set up to record people’s oral histories and stories about life on the creek. After the event, the recordings will be stored in a historical archive.
“A lot of times we focus on nature and building the environment,” she said, “but we understand that wouldn’t exist without the communities that lived here along the way. It wouldn’t be what it is today without that. So we really want to try to celebrate all aspects of the creek and its culture.”
