American Legion Post Recognized as Best Veterans Organization in Belmont County
Barnesville American Legion Post 168 has been honored as the Best of 2026 Belmont County Award winner in the Veterans Organization category, an honor certified by BusinessRate, a service that identifies and ranks local businesses based on Google reviews and recent customer feedback
Unlike traditional awards, this recognition is not based on applications or nominations, but on authentic community feedback and verified customer reviews. The awards highlight local leaders in customer satisfaction, brand reputation and service excellence.
Post 168 received notification of the award in the mail in early April. Members of the organization said they were surprised by the recognition.
“Is this real?” trustee Dave Bunting said.
“It makes us all feel good …,” Bunting added. “ I’ve got a hell of a crew to work with. We were very appreciative to get something like this in the mail.”
Trustee Gary Mayberry said the recognition highlights the continued strength of the American Legion despite an aging veteran population.
Bunting noted that in his 18 years of involvement with the American Legion, this is one of the most meaningful highlights.
“This award means a great deal for all of us, because we have a great club,” Bunting said.
The American Legion’s mission is to support and advocate for veterans and active-duty service members, mentor youth and strengthen the local community.
The post operates primarily on donations. Bunting noted the organization rarely turns away anyone in need of assistance.
Mayberry added that the Legion prioritizes keeping its support local, including contributions to Barnesville Exempted Village School District sports programs.
The organization also hosts community fundraising events, including a Cancer Walk that raises approximately $50,000 annually for cancer-related needs.
Members also financially support various community service efforts, including providing funds for the Summer Lunch Program for schoolchildren and local fire and police departments.

The post also hosts the annual Memorial Day service. It will take place at 11 a.m., May 25 at the Veterans Plaza located at the corner of Arch and Main Streets. More details on the program will be shared prior to the service.
