Captina Conservancy Announces Statewide Fishing Derby

Captina Conservancy will sponsor a statewide fishing derby from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 23, inviting anglers across Ohio to cast their lines in support of conservation efforts.

Anyone with a valid Ohio fishing license may participate in public waters, ranging from Lake Erie and the Ohio River, Muskingum Conservancy and State Park lakes to Barnesville reservoirs.

Entry for the tournament is $35 per person, and participants must register at least 24 hours prior to the event. Submissions will close at 4 p.m. the day of the derby.

The competition is open to all fish species and will be scored based on the combined length of each participant’s three longest catches.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Captina Conservancy projects, habitat restoration and community events.

Anglers can participate by downloading the FishDonkey app and searching “Captina Fishing Derby” to register. The app will also be used for participants to submit catches and view a live leaderboard throughout the day.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top finishers, including $500 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third.

Official rules are available within the app upon registration. For more information, contact executive director Turner Provost at 740-238-3415 or email contact@captina.org.

“We’re looking for new and unique ways to do some fundraising …,” Provost said. “In the past, we’ve really only had one fundraising activity, and this year we’re trying to expand events and this seems like a fun, family friendly idea.”
