Triathlon at Barkcamp State Park in August

BELMONT — On Aug. 22 at Barkcamp State Park will hose a triathlon named “Flight to Freedom Adventure Race”. The race begins at 8 a.m. Packets can be picked up at 6:30 a.m. the day of the event.

Given that it is a triathlon, a swim (or kayaking), an 8-mile bike trail and a 5K trail run are expected in the race.

Kristina Estle is a public historian and museum director for the Underground Railroad Museum currently located in Flushing. According to Estle, the triathlon is purposely designed to mimic the journey that enslaved people would have taken.

“I participated in a triathlon last year, and it dawned on me how much the experience resembled the journey a fleeing runaway or freedom seeker would have experienced in this area,” Estle said.

This is the first year for the Flight to Freedom Adventure Race with all proceeds going to the museum.

“Though I have participated in many triathlons, this will be the first time that I am the race director,” Estle said. “I am very excited for this amazing opportunity.”

Registration for the triathlon is currently live with an early bird discount being available. For more information, contact Kristina Estle, the director of the event at director@ugrrm.org or check the event page.
