This restored Massy-Harris tractor was on display at the Ohio Hills Folk Festival’s Tractor Show at Walton Field last weekend in Quaker City. On Saturday morning this tractor and others were paraded about for the “Tractor Cruise”.
This is a 1951 Massy-Harris ’22. It was the pride and joy of Salesville area farmer Gene Burga (1937-2021). Today, it is owned by his grandson-in-law, Brandon Lowry.
Burga, a native of Somerton, retired after a career of 44 years with Broughton Dairy. His obituary noted, “he was a farmer who raised Limousin cattle and was a member of the Limousin Cattle Association for forty-five years. He enjoyed his tractor collection and tractor cruises – he was one of the organizers and officers for the Leatherwood Tractor Club”.
Massey-Harris was a prominent Canadian agricultural machinery manufacturer that revolutionized farming with early innovations like mass-produced four-wheel-drive (the GP) and self-propelled combines. The company merged with Ferguson in 1953 to form Massey-Ferguson, and today the original “Massey-Harris” name lives on only through historical tractors, collectors’ models, and agricultural history.
