Eyes of Freedom Returns to Barnesville
The Eyes of Freedom was escorted into Barnesville on Wednesday evening during the King Pumpkin Weigh-Off. The Barnesville Police Department, followed by a motorcycle brigade, led the escort through downtown to the Barnesville Middle School. With sirens blaring, the Barnesville Fire Department and the EMS came next.
The Barnesville and Bethesda Fire Departments created a “Flag Bridge” with their ladder trucks in the middle of E. Main Street’s first block.
According to the Eyes of Freedom website, the Eyes of Freedom is “a traveling memorial dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of all who answer our Nation’s call.” The memorial has been displayed in 36 states and over 420 events.
This year marks the 21st anniversary of the Lima Company’s loss of 23 men killed in action while deployed in Iraq. Columbus artist Anita Miller created the life-sized portraits based on a dream. The eyes of the 23 men depicted in the portraits reflect the thousands of men and women who have given their lives and served our nation.
The Eyes of Freedom memorial is open to visitors at the Barnesville Middle School during the Pumpkin Festival. Hours are 12-7 pm Thursday through Saturday and 10 am – 6 pm on Sunday.
